The Empire Strikes Back: 30 Years Later

The year was 1980; Jimmy Carter was President, the Iran-Iraq war had begun, and CNN is launched as the first all news network.  On May 23, the second movie in the Star Wars Saga, The Empire Strikes Back, was released in theaters.

For eleven weeks, The Empire Strikes Back held the top spot at the box office and earned over $534 million worldwide making it the highest grossing film of 1980.  Thirty years after its release, The Empire Strikes Back  still remains a strong influence in pop culture.  The most recent reference to Empire is Family Guy’s Something, Something, Something Darkside.
