Review of Beyonce’s New Album 4

Yesterday, Beyonce’s fourth album, appropriately titled 4, was released and this has to be her best album yet.  You can tell that Beyonce has drawn upon some 80s diva influence.  The first track, “1 + 1”, is a beautiful love song about being grateful for the person you care about.   In “The Best Thing I Never Had”, Beyonce sings about someone she almost loved but saw how he really was and was thankful that she never was involved with him.  This song speaks to those of us that fell for the wrong person but realized that they weren’t right for us before it was too late.   My favorite song off 4 is “Love on Top” because the beginning of the song is very reminiscent of Jody Watley’s “Real Love” and also because Beyonce seems to have drawn influence from 80s diva, Roberta Flack.  While most of the songs on 4 Beyonce co-wrote, “Love on Top” was written solely by her.  Another song I love is “Countdown” in which Beyonce starts out by singing coincidently (or not) “Killing me softly”.  This song is very funky and fun especially when it reaches the chorus where Beyonce uses a countdown to talk about her man.  No diva album is complete without a Dianne Warren penned ballad, and Beyonce got one of, if not the best ballad that Dianne has written, “I Was Here”.  This ballad isn’t necessarily about love but about making your mark on the world.  4 ends with the first single off this album, “Run the World (Girls)”, which is along the lines of “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” but with more girl power.

I recommend buying this album because it is Beyonce at her best.  Early sales are already predicting that 4 will number one on the Billboard 200 next week.
