GLEE- “Yes/ No” Episode Review

Glee returned this week with what is being heralded as the best episode yet.  The episode appropriately titled “Yes/ No” gave us two proposals, another character who got married before this episode, and an interesting look into the inner thoughts of a well-loved character with the voice of Helen Mirren.  Spoilers ahead after the jump.

“Yes/No” started out with Mercedes and Sam recalling their summer romance in an almost shot-by-shot tribute to Grease’s song, “Summer Nights”.  The cast pulls off the number flawlessly including both Naya Rivera and Chris Colfer splitting Rizzo’s role.  Then the focus goes to the co-captain of the Cheerios, Becky Jackson (played by the amazing Lauren Potter), with Helen Mirren as her inner voice.  Hearing Mirren say “Is that a mohawk, Puckerman, or did someone glue a squirrel to your head?” was priceless.

The next scene shows Coach Bieste telling Emma and Sue that she and Cooter eloped over holiday break prompting Emma to wonder if Will will want to marry her.  Cue Emma singing “The Wedding Bell Blues” by The 5th Dimension with Coach Bieste and Sue as her backup singers complete with Sue wearing the hat made famous by Princess Beatrice at Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

Other highlights from “Yes/ No”:

  • Nene Leakes from The Real Housewives of Atlanta making her acting debut as McKinley High’s synchronized swimming coach, Roz Washington
  • Artie, Mike and Will doing a mashup of “Moves Like Jagger” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”
  • Rachel, Tina, Mercedes, and Santana performing Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”

The best parts of the show came at the end of the show though.  The first one was Will’s proposal to Emma complete with synchronized swimming to Rihanna’s “We Found Love” performed by the New Directions with Rachel and Santana singing.  Both ladies looked amazing in their Ester Williams inspired bathing suits.  This was one of the best songs done by the cast.  To Ryan Murphy, co-creator of Glee, give Lea Michele and Naya Rivera more duets.  Their voices complement each other.  Maybe give Rachel and Santana a duet for Regionals or Nationals.

The other best part of the show came at the end of the show when Finn proposed to Rachel.  After Finn pops the question, the episode ends.  Will Rachel say yes?  I guess will we find out in two weeks.
