It’s that time of year again. The competition on American Idol begins with the Top 13. This time around, with the beginning of the finals, new rules are in place. Even though I do not like when they make up new rules on the spot, this one seemed to make it an interesting night. The rule that Ryan decreed was that it was boys against girls and tonight it would be revealed who received the lowest votes among the boys and the girls. From there, the judges would decide if it is the boy or the girl who would be sent home. With the guys taking on the songs of Stevie Wonder and the girls paying tribute to the recently departed Whitney Houston, the Top 13 competition show looked promising. As it was last year, Interscope Records exec/ producer, Jimmy Iovine and the guest mentor, Mary J. Blige, helped the contestants with their song choices. So many great music videos have premiered here recently that i decided to do a post with all of them.
First up, we have “Paradise” by Coldplay. The second single from Coldplay’s new album, Mylo Xyloto, “Paradise” music video features Chris Martin in an elephant costume making a voyage to reach his band mates, who are also in elephant costumes. The video is directed by Mat Whitecross. The video was filmed in London and South Africa.
Since I did not cover it when it first premiered, I thought would talk about the video for “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” from Coldplay, the first single from Mylo Xyloto which is out in a few short days. This video was also directed by Mat Whitecross.
Even though the video to Jennifer Lopez’s “Papi” has been out for a month, I thought this video was worth mentioning because it is Jennifer Lopez at her best and this is one of my favorite songs off of her Love?. The video was directed by Paul Hunter and choreographed by the So You Think You Can Dance choreography duo known as Nappytabs.
Finally we have Beyonce’s “Love on Top”, which I have loved since the album first came out and I even said that it had an eighties feel to it. The style used for the video for “Love on Top” was similar to the style of music videos that the 80s band, New Edition made. The video features Beyonce singing and dancing with a group of male backup dancers.
Coming soon, I will post the video to one of this blog’s favorite artists, Lady Gaga. She just wrapped filming the video for “Marry the Night”, the fifth single from Born This Way. As soon as the video premieres, I will have it on here.
I admit, when Pitbull first came on the scene in 2004, I didn’t pay attention to him because I am not really big on rap. Then last year when he did the rap on Enrique Iglesias’ single “I Like It” and I got to see that Pitbull was very interesting.
This 30 year-old Cuban-American has definite Latin heat. so much so, he’s on fire. He also appeared with Jennifer Lopez on her single “On the Floor”.
When he released his own single, “Give Me Everything” with Ne-yo, Nayer, and Afrojack, I was definitely paying attention. The song is upbeat and an appropriate anthem.
He is really sexy when he takes off his sunglasses and looks at the camera with talking sideways out of his mouth. His newest single, “Rain Over Me” featuring Marc Anthony, was just released Friday and already has over 12 million views on You Tube.
Yesterday morning, it was announced online and on the local television stations here in Las Vegas that iHeartRadio was bringing their first ever music festival to Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. This festival promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience with many of the top performers in the music industry. Already the line-up for the two-day festival is looking like a who’s who in music with Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Bruno Mars, Carrie Underwood and many more. The full lineup so far is here with more being announced throughout the summer.
I am really excited about this because this is as big as the Billboard Music Awards or Grammys. I emailed the person in charge of press passes in the hope that I will be able to cover this event. I will keep all of you updated on this.
Okay after watching the two-hour long American Idol finale, I have to conclude that this seemed like it was the longest finale in Idol history. It was good in some spots but for the most part it was bad. Here are the thoughts I wrote during the show in chronological order:
In honor of the release of the new Broadway cast recording of “West Side Story” being released today on CD and MP3, I thought would share my experience with “West Side Story.” In high school, I was passionately involved in the drama program our high school had. The first play I was in was “West Side Story” and it was also the first Broadway musical that our high school did. I have to say from someone who’s been in “West Side Story” I have respect for anyone who has been involved with that play ever. Not only is there elaborate choreography for all the musical numbers, the fights have elaborate choreography as well. If you are wondering what role I played in “West Side Story”, I was one of the Jets. It was one of the hardest yet most fun roles I played. Anytime I hear music from “West Side Story” my mind flashes back to being in our high school production of this. The movie “West Side Story” is easily one of my favorite movie musicals. A big part of me would like to see them make a new movie version of it. I know who would be the stars in my dream cast of the new “West Side Story” movie:
Tony- Adam Lambert
Maria- Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical)
Riff- Ewan McGregor
Bernardo- Enrique Iglesias
Anita- Jennifer Lopez ( I got this idea from Vanity Fair’s “West Side Story Revisited” photo shoot, I think she would be a perfect Anita)
