What do starships have to do with a beach?
Before I go into my thoughts about last night’s Grammys, I wanted to make a major criticism to CBS and the Grammy Association itself. Those of us who are music and pop culture bloggers on the west coast had to wait three hours behind the east coast to see the telecast of the Grammys. It made it very difficult to tweet or blog about who was performing or who won what when the east coast knew three hours before we did. It’s not like it couldn’t be shown at the same time as the east coast. I have seen it done with other award shows. Now that I got that complaint off my chest on to the show itself:
On Sunday, February 12, the yearly tradition of the awards show known as the Grammys will take place. This year’s set of nominees have set the music world on fire with some memorable songs. Here are my predictions for the 2012 Grammys:
Just announced this morning at 7:45 am PST, the Beach Boys will reunite on the Grammy stage and perform with pop/rock groups Foster the People and Maroon 5. This will be the first time that the Beach Boys have performed live together in over twenty years. Also scheduled to perform is The Civil Wars, Diana Krall, Joe Walsh, Nicki Minaj, and more.
One of the most anticipated performances is British band Coldplay and R & B superstar Rihanna, who will perform “Princess of China” from Coldplay’s new album Mylo Xyloto.
Welcome to another edition of “Music Videos You Should See”. In this article, all but one of the videos has Nicki Minaj in them. The videos featured here are from a pop icon, a dj/ producer, Nicki Minaj herself, and a British band.
The first video is from the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. “Give Me All Your Luvin'” is the first single off of Madonna’s twelfth studio album, MDNA. The video, directed by Megaforce, is a football and cheerleader theme inspired by her upcoming performance at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show set to air on Sunday.
The next video is “Turn Me On” by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj directed by Sanji. The video is set in a steampunk world and has a Frankenstein and his monster feel to it.
Nicki Minaj is front and center in the next video. “Stupid Hoe” is the first single from Minaj’s forthcoming second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The video, directed by Hype Williams, is a menagerie of eclectic imagery. While it broke the record of number of views in 24 hours on Vevo, 4.8 million views, more people disliked the video than liked it. Christopher R. Weingarten of Spin Magazine described Nicki Minaj as “Grace Jones getting lost in one of Katy Perry’s wonkafied adventures“.
The final video, from British band Coldplay, is “Charlie Brown” once again directed by Mat Whitecross. The video centers around a concert or festival. While this is the third video/ single from Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto album, this is one of favorite songs.
Well I thought I would try something different. This week has been great for both me and pop culture. So many things have happened this week that it’s necessary to do a week in review article.
First off, Sunday was the Billboard Music Awards here in Las Vegas, and I was down there at the white carpet taking pictures. I have to say even though I wish I could have been there inside the MGM Grande Arena to watch the show, seeing some the best performances on television was the next best thing.
How amazing was Beyonce? This woman is unstoppable force.
Rihanna and Britney Spears’ performance was unbelievable. The thing that I loved most about this performance was that the general public knew that Rihanna would be performing but the producers kept it a secret that Britney was going to perform. Here in Vegas we found out that this was the case the day before when a pic of Britney onstage with Rihanna during rehearsals was leaked.
Before I saw this performance, I never cared to even check into Nicki Minaj’s music but after seeing her on the white carpet and seeing this performance made me at least have an appreciation for her as artist and a fan of her song “Super Bass”.
She is freaky to watch but I want to see what her facial expressions are going to be throughout the video.
On Monday, Lady Gaga’s second album was released. You can read my review here. Also released on Monday was Glee, The Music Vol. 6 with the original songs from the season finale, “Pretending” and “Light Up The World”.
These songs were even better than the songs they did for Regionals.
On Wednesday, Oprah Winfrey ended her 25 year run of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Mind you I am not a big fan of Oprah. I do not dislike her but I was never really into her show. Needless to say that she has had a huge impact on pop culture. Jimmy Kimmel did a hilarious take on her farewell to her fans.
Finally today after two weeks in a coma, Jeff Conaway best known for both his role as Kenickie in “Grease” and from the television “Taxi” died today. Conaway, who was 60, was put into a medically induced coma after a case of pneumonia and too many prescribed drugs. He was taken off of life support yesterday.
Here are the pics from my first awards show red carpet. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.
